Domino’s Hot From The Box
Friday night’s Mandurah Derby final promises to be a magnificent encounter with some sizzling performances delivered in last week’s heats.
None more so than the Kylie McLennan trained Domino Mac who equalled Zack Monelli’s 490 metre track record time of 27.02 seconds which was set in last year’s Mandurah Derby series.
Domino Mac had no luck in his Perth Cup heat when falling and to bounce back in such dominant fashion at his next start shows enormous tenacity.
From box two in his Derby heat Domino Mac was able to reel off a flying early split of 5.66 and he never looked like being headed romping in by more than six lengths.
The son of former Group 1 Galaxy Winner Rippin’ Sam has now has 28 career starts for 10 wins and 6 placings and he has won both of his starts over the Mandurah 490 metre trip.
He will exit box eight in the final, a draw he has had on four occasions for 3 wins and a placing. He is happy to course wide in his runs and with his customary speedy getaway he should be right in the finish again.
Victorian speedster Earn The Answers was also mighty impressive in his WA debut for leading trainer David Hobby recording an early split of 5.69 before leading throughout in a hot 27.16 seconds.
Out of the heats the abovementioned duo hold a significant time edge on their rivals with the other heats being won by Fearless Eagles (27.46 seconds) and Got The Swagger (27.54 seconds).
There are also three excellent heats of the WA Oaks earlier in the night.
In the first heat you can make a case for a few with Beck’s Monelli, Chevy Nova, Oh My Word and Westdale Nikita all in with a hope.
In the second heat the clash between predominantly Glorious Gunn and Our Seabrook should be a tremendous contest.
Glorious Gunn has drawn the cherry and is coming off a hot debut performance at Cannington where she ran a slick 29.77seconds.
In box four Our Seabrook has been unplaced at her last three runs in top grade company but her prior form was hot and she has won 7 of her 21 starts with a further 9 placings.
Rippin’ Memphis had to be scratched out of the Group 1 Perth Cup final (where she was favourite) with a split webbing but she has since trialled well and class will take her a long way in heat three where she has drawn box six.
On Saturday night at Cannington another stellar night of chasing lies ahead and the return of Tommy Shelby in the Free For All where he meets emerging stars Sunset Spitfire and Projectory is box office material.
Tommy’s last start was on April 10 when taking out the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg final at Wentworth Park.
It was the run that took his stake earnings over $1 million, just the seventh greyhound in history to achieve that feat.
Tommy has come up with box one on Saturday night and he tuned up with a 520 metre solo trial last Thursday morning where he ran a slashing 29.35 seconds.
All going well this Saturday Tommy will then head across to Victoria for a tilt at the upcoming Harrison Dawson series.
Sunset Spitfire has drawn box 8 in the Free To All and the promising son of Mepunga Blazer returned from a 14 week break on the 13th April when he scorched around the Mandurah 405 metre circuit in 22.35 seconds, winning a Mixed Grade 4/5 by more than 4 lengths.
The David Hobby trained chaser has won 13 of his 14 lifetime starts and all 9 starts at the Cannington track.
Adding further spice to the contest is the Christine Robartson trained Projectory who won the Group 3 Perth Cup Consolation a fortnight ago in a best of night time of 29.58 seconds.
Projectory backed that performance up with another hot run last week when he was able to win the Free For All over 520 metres in 29.60 seconds.
Group 1 Galaxy winner Zack Monelli continues on his preparations towards a start in the upcoming Sandown Cup series when he exits box two in a Mixed Grade 4/5 over 600 metres.
The son of Barcia Bale and Penny Monelli has drawn favourably in box two and is unbeaten after three tries over the middle distance trip at headquarters.
