The Dogs WA takes a spot in Australia’s richest race in 2021
The Dogs WA has secured a slot in the newest and richest race on the Australian greyhound calendar this year: The Phoenix, setting off an exciting round of qualifying races to find a contender.
The Phoenix is the world’s only slot race for greyhounds, with a $750,000 winner’s cheque and total prize pool of more than $1.1 million.
Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) Manager Greyhound Racing Peter Howell explained the stirring qualifying race series planned in the lead-up to the major event.
“This innovative slot-based race is the first of its kind for greyhound racing and the opportunity to be The Dogs WA slot holder is not to be missed,” Peter said.
“To celebrate RWWA’s new greyhound racing brand: The Dogs WA, we applied for one of the eight slots available in the Phoenix and we’re delighted to have successfully gained a place in the inaugural race.
“We can further announce The Dogs WA Road to the Phoenix qualifying race series to choose the champion to represent us in the big race.”
The first and second placegetters in the Group 2 All Stars Final and Group 3 Young Stars will each get tickets to The Dogs WA Road to the Phoenix qualifying race series.
The first placegetters in each of the four races at Cannington on 20 November will also earn a spot in the qualifying series.
The eight qualifiers will be further narrowed down in two races at Cannington on 27 November. The process will culminate in a two-dog race on the same track on 4 December, where the winner will become The Dogs WA Phoenix slot holder.
“Just as the phoenix is a mythical bird which symbolises immortality, there will be enduring honour and fame for The Dogs WA inaugural contender in the Phoenix race,” Peter said.
“If The Dogs WA contender wins any prize money in the Phoenix, we can confirm that every cent will go to the greyhound’s winning team.”
The Phoenix will be held at The Meadows in Melbourne on 18 December.
