Top chasers announced as Greyhound of the Year finalists
Amplified, Mambo Monelli and Vice Grip have been announced as the runners competing for the prestigious title of 2022 Greyhound of the Year.
Amplified raced 35 times in 2022 for 21 wins and eight placings, for $161,040 in stakes.
In addition to winning the Group 3 Paradise Street Trophy and The Anniversary Cup for trainer Krystal Shinners, Amplified also placed second in the Group 3 Mandurah Cup and Spring Gift.
Proving her versatility, Amplified won races over distances ranging from 380m to 600m and equalled the 490m track record in Mandurah in July.
Mambo Monelli raced eight times in 2022, taking home six wins and two placings for $154,215 in stakes.
In addition to winning both the Sandi’s Me Mum Memorial and the Group 1 Galaxy with trainer Steven Withers, Mambo Monelli also set a new 600m track record in Cannington.
Vice Grip, trained by Adam Smithson, raced 26 times in 2022 for 13 wins and ten placings, winning $380,440 in stakes.
Vice Grip secured several high-profile wins throughout the year, including the Group 1 Perth Cup, Lew Dorsa Memorial, the Spring Gift, the Group 3 Mandurah Cup and the Group 2 All Stars.
Vice Grip also found success on the national stage, placing third in the Group 1 Top Gun and securing spots in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup and Group 1 Hobart Thousand finals.
Acknowledgments were also given to Bones McCoy, Electrified, Hinto, Throttle and Tsar Bell who were all under consideration by the panel.
Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) Chief Racing Officer David Hunter said the three chasers represented the best of the best of WA’s greyhound talent.
“The three finalists all had tremendous success on the track in 2022 and I look forward to seeing who will join the WA Greyhound of the Year honour roll,” David said.
The winner will be announced at the 2022 Greyhound of the Year Awards on Sunday, 29 January 2023 at Crown Perth.
