Top runners announced as contenders for the 2021 WA Greyhound of the Year
Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) is pleased to announce that the following three greyhounds (in alphabetical order) are the final contenders for the 2021 WA Greyhound of the Year (GOTY) Title – TOMMY SHELBY, VICE GRIP and ZACK MONELLI.
TOMMY SHELBY raced 14 times during 2021 for eight wins and four placings for a total of $616,830 in stakes.
Tommy dominated the National chasing scene early in the year with wins in the prestigious Group 1 Australian Cup and Group 1 Golden Easter Egg.
His staggering success saw him named the Australian Greyhound of the Year for the 2020/21 season and is looking to go back-to-back for WA Greyhound of the Year.
VICE GRIP raced 13 times for his WA connections in 2021 for seven wins and four placings for a total of $125,045 in stakes.
From the kennels of Adam Smithson, he took out the State’s second biggest open sprint race on the calendar, the Group 2 All Stars and The Dogs WA match race where he represented The Dogs WA in the inaugural Phoenix at The Meadows, Victoria.
ZACK MONELLI raced 18 times during 2021 for 13 wins and two placings for a total of $199,525 in stakes.
Notching up impressive wins in the Group 3 Miata and the Group 1 Galaxy, he also performed admirably in the Eastern states making a further three Group 1 finals during the 2021 season.
RWWA Chief Racing Officer Charlotte Mills said that this year’s contenders presented a strong field who have produced outstanding performances on both the local and national stage.
“The past year has been hugely successful for the greyhound racing community and we are proud to have witnessed such fantastic results for all the Greyhound of the Year contenders,” Charlotte said.
“The Greyhound of the Year awards event is a great opportunity for the industry to come together and we look forward to celebrating their achievements.”
The winner will be announced at the 2021 Greyhound of the Year Awards, which will take place on Sunday, 30 January 2022 at Crown Perth.
